How Far in Advance Should
You Order a Cake?

The answer depends on what you are ordering. Here is a clear guide to ordering lead times for every type of cake.

One of the most common mistakes people make when ordering a custom cake is leaving it too late. Your favourite baker is not sitting around waiting for your call. Good bakers are busy, and their calendars fill up fast, especially during peak seasons. Here is exactly how much notice you need for every type of cake order.

Recommended Lead Times at a Glance

Birthday Cakes: 2 to 3 Weeks

For a birthday cake, 2 to 3 weeks is the sweet spot. This gives your baker time to discuss the design, source any special ingredients, plan the schedule and create the cake without rushing. A rushed cake is never as good as one made with proper planning.

If your birthday cake involves complex decorations like sculpted fondant figures, hand painted details or sugar flowers, you may need an extra week because these elements are incredibly time consuming to create.

Wedding Cakes: 3 to 6 Months

Wedding cakes should be booked as early as possible. Most London bakers take on a limited number of wedding orders per weekend to maintain quality. During peak season from May to September, popular bakers can be fully booked months ahead.

The ideal timeline is to book your baker 4 to 6 months before the wedding. You do not need to finalise every detail at that stage. Booking simply secures your date with a deposit. The design consultation usually happens 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding, once your other details like flowers, colour scheme and venue are confirmed.

Cupcakes: 1 to 2 Weeks

Cupcakes are quicker to produce than tiered cakes, so the lead time is shorter. A standard order of 12 to 24 cupcakes needs 1 to 2 weeks notice. Larger orders of 50 or more cupcakes need 2 to 3 weeks because of the sheer volume of baking and decorating involved.

Last Minute Orders

We understand that sometimes life throws surprises at you. A forgotten birthday, a spontaneous celebration, or a cake emergency where the original order fell through. We do our best to accommodate last minute requests, typically with 48 to 72 hours notice.

However, there are some things to bear in mind with short notice orders:

The best advice? As soon as you know you need a cake, get in touch. Even if it feels early, it is always better to have your spot secured.

Busy Periods to Plan Around

Certain times of year are significantly busier than others. If your celebration falls during one of these periods, order earlier than usual:
